Primary Responsibilities and Role in the Organization Summary:
One Tree Planted is looking for a dynamic individual to add to our fast growing team. The Forest & Carbon Monitoring Lead’s primary responsibility will be to lead the organization’s development of: 1. The Monitoring/Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system; and 2. Enhanced Monitoring system. These systems will monitor carbon and co-benefits for our restoration projects across the organization with an emphasis on demonstrating impact and adhering to global best practice standards, including Verra, Gold Standard, American Carbon Registry, Climate Action Reserve, Plan Vivo, SD Vista, ICROA and others
Reports to our Sr. Carbon Specialist
Develop a long-term strategy for monitoring, evaluation, and learning at One Tree Planted, including: Impact areas, priority actions, roles and responsibilities and data storage, analysis and sharing.
Review existing One Tree Planted monitoring protocols and initiatives. Assess against leading carbon standards and best practice reforestation monitoring guidelines and provide recommendations/guidelines for improvement.
Work with the Projects, Marketing and Fundraising teams to understand the needs of planting partners and corporate partners. Use this knowledge to refine monitoring design and reporting across the organization to ensure that partner needs are addressed in our reporting processes.
Develop key partnerships with technology providers (satellite, drone, phone apps), academia, NGOs and others to utilize the best available tools and evidence to improve monitoring.
Evaluate emergent technologies and propose integration where merited and process improvements (e.g. blockchain, NFT, etc.).
Develop monitoring protocols to assess the carbon sequestration and co-benefit impacts of One Tree Planted’s reforestation projects in accordance with leading global standards.
Advise One Tree Planted staff on the design, supervision and MRV of our reforestation projects that aim to deliver carbon claims or credits.
Develop capacity building resources for staff, implementation partners and communities.
Support the organization’s response to verifier, registry, and government regulator findings/questions.
Maintain project timelines and meet strict deadlines.
Other duties as required.
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree Master of Science in Forestry, Forest Science, Forest Carbon or related field with a minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience.
Experience in monitoring and evaluation of forest ecosystems, Nature based Solutions (NbS) and forest modeling.
Knowledge of co-benefits monitoring and experience in agroforestry/reforestation/assisted natural regeneration or other restoration projects across a variety of ecosystems.
Carbon project development and project/organization-wide MRV experience is highly desired.
Sound knowledge on MRV tools and methodologies, international carbon standards and corporate emission reduction initiatives (e.g. SbTi).
Excellent writing and communication skills and ability to translate complex information on carbon and co-benefits into succinct reports and guidance materials for One Tree Planted staff, implementation partners and corporates.
Experience working in collaboration with a range of organizations to monitor project goals and generate positive impact.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Experience in ArcGIS and other software relevant to carbon modeling and monitoring of forest metrics.
Self-motivated and highly organized, with strong attention to detail.
Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese and/or French would be advantageous.
Good time-management and self-management skills, is able to take direction, and work independently and collaboratively.
Collegial personality and team player.
Ability to work remotely and able to travel internationally for site visits.
IDEAL LOCATION: Remote, all US and equivalent timezones considered.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
COMPENSATION: Starting range is $70,000 USD – $90,000 USD which will be based on skills and experience. Annual performance increase may be available but not guaranteed.
