We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled technical specialist in the field of water policy to support the work of the new Land Use Policy team. The successful candidate will be seen as a respected and highly knowledgeable commentator in the field of sustainable use and management of water resources, and will be a passionate and effective champion for the change nature needs.

The post is for a 12 month contract and the role will focus on developing and maintaining strong reputations and relationships with important external stakeholders and providing nationally/internationally recognised expertise.

Working directly with decision makers and those who shape policy, and by encouraging others to step up and act on nature’s behalf. There will therefore be the expectation of travel to ensure effective, integrated working across the four UK countries and with BirdLife partners, as appropriate.

Qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience required: Essential qualifications:

Educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline or substantial experience relevant to the role. Essential knowledge:

Highly developed and expert understanding of technical policy specialism
Comprehensive and high-level network of contacts and relationships relevant to influencing policy priorities, including at international levels
Thorough understanding of wider environment/biodiversity policy.
Highly developed and expert knowledge of UK/EU/global institutions where relevant to policy priorities.
A good understanding of the role of public facing communications/campaigns in supporting policy advocacy.

Essential skills:

Able to analyse complex issues in a fast paced environment.
Well-developed negotiating and influencing skills, relevant to the role.
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, relevant to the role.
Strong time management and organisational skills.
Able to prioritise effectively.
Able to manage projects effectively.
Competent use of Microsoft Office.
If line management is part of the role, proven experience of line managing staff to deal with multiple priorities, whilst achieving against deadlines and time-limited objectives.
